ABOUT US

TONTO APACHE TRIBE

The Tonto Apache Tribe has inhabited this area since long before Payson existed. A hardy and determined group of people who refused to be driven out in the classic Indian Wars of the 1800s, the Tonto Apaches, under the guidance of Chief Milton Campbell, worked hard to acquire the present reservation land in the 1970s.

The Tonto Apaches have long strived to retain their proud heritage while educating themselves and working to improve living conditions and opportunities on the reservation.

With the construction and opening of the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino, the Tonto Apaches have found themselves in a position to greatly improve their quality of life, school, health and business opportunities, and to contribute significantly to charitable causes in Payson and the surrounding Arizona Rim Country area.

Frybread For Families

An Employee Outreach Program of Mazatzal Hotel & Casino and Tonto Apache Enterprises

Frybread for Families, Inc. is an employee outreach program of Mazatzal Hotel & Casino and the Tonto Apache Tribal Enterprises dedicated to helping families in the greater Payson community.  In 2011 the organization became a 501c3 corporation.  The Frybread for Families Team raises funds primarily through frybread sales.

In 2013 Frybread for Families invited local non-profit organizations to join forces to help provide Christmas to local families in need.  This collaborative group became the NPCT, or Non-profits Coming Together, and has been active in the community for four years.   Frybread for Families and NPCT host a Family Christmas Carnival at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino Event Center for qualifying families, and all children receive gifts of clothing and toys.  In 2016, approximately 75 families will benefit from the 2016 NPCT Christmas Program.

ARIZONA RIM COUNTRY

Payson Arizona is a friendly community of about 15,000 with roots extending back to the ranching and mining days of the 1800s. It was rumored to have some of the best bootleg liquor in Arizona in the early 1900s. Zane Grey brought fame to the area through his novels such as "Under the Tonto Rim" and television helped show the beauty of the area, especially in "Grizzly Adams". MGM's lion was rescued by local cowboys when a plane crashed in the 1940s in the Hell's Gate area not far from the present Tonto Apache Reservation.

Payson is a blend of Old West flavor, alpine forests, and modern amenities. Four seasons of mild weather provide a wealth of outdoor activities with lots of hiking and cycling trails, horseback riding, golf, fishing and lakes. The community offers a range of activities and entertainment from antique stores and art galleries to museums and movies, and many excellent restaurants.

Five forested communities of "Arizona Rim Country" (Payson, Pine, Strawberry, Star Valley & Christopher Creek) welcome you to the 'Heart of Arizona' which is located in the largest Ponderosa pine forest in the world, known as the Tonto National Forest. Payson is just over 5,000 feet in altitude and is located in one of 3 pure ozone belts in the world.

Highway 87 through Payson is the second route to the Grand Canyon, Sedona and the unmatched beauty of the Arizona Rim Country - it is just a little over an hour drive from Phoenix Arizona and its International Airport.

Come to the Casino, hike with llamas, attend rodeos and tribal dances, visit an archeology museum, explore wilderness areas or take a scenic flight. Inexpensive golf, great food and 600 rooms await you!
